Daniel Delorenzo

I am an agronomist in Chile. My consultancy business started in Los Angeles and then extended to the dairy and beef production area in the tenth region. I then developed clients in extensive areas like Patagonia and also the central part of Chile (Santiago and surrounded areas) where dry land is more tough with less than 180 mm of rain that happens only in two month. Patagonia is like a cold desert and central Chile hot dry like Australia.
My job was to help farmers develop fertiliser plans and introduce better pasture species to improve pasture production.
After 11 visits to NZ to learn about best practice to get my farmer clients to succeed in their business I started my own farming operation in partnership with my brother who is an enterprising men from Santiago in construction engineering. Since 2006 we have purchased 3 farms in Talca area close to the Andean mountains. The farms were all undeveloped and we have been cropping different seed crops to improve soil fertility, lots of fencing and introduced Patagonian ewes. The ewes were mated to my own Border Leicester rams that I had been breeding on my small block property from Los Angeles.
I joined Sheep for Profit in 2007 to help us improve our management skills. We have had many challenges because veterinary skills and facilities in Chile are not able to give us the advice we need. The big jump in stock productivity have been demonstrated this year, after introducing new genetics and better stock management so now we see the difference between us and the rest of sheep farmers in Chile.
I am very pleased to become part of the StockCARE® team in Chile. Thank you for this opportunity and I will try with passion to represent StockCARE® here and South America with the best practice and look over the big picture aspects on farm business and productivity.
My aim is to introduce StockCARE® to Chilean farmers using our partnership farms as models and examples to demonstrate how the programme can help to improve productivity in our sheep industry.
