Mark Colson

I provide the StockCARE® programme to farmers in the Timaru, Geraldine, Fairlie and the Mackenzie areas. I also have a number of farmer clients in the Chatham Islands.

I graduated in 1981 and practiced at Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, for three years before working overseas. I returned to Geraldine in 1990, where my work takes me around "some of the most spectacular and interesting countryside in the land."

A large part of our work involves giving advice and developing strategies and plans alongside the farmer to deal with various animal health and farming issues. This has its frustrations, especially when all the farm information and performance parameters are not available. You're then forced to rely on experience, limited historical information, best practice and your ongoing continuing education to help develop the best plan.

If I can put these skills alongside the StockCARE® processes of data recording, analysis and partnerships with other agribusinesses then this makes a very powerful mix.

The StockCARE® philosophy that appeals is that the focus is on the farmer finding the opportunities to improve the business, while the StockCARE® data recording system reveals what the drivers are that make the business tick. From there you then work together to lift those areas that are slowing down the farm's profitability.
