No new posts EMPLOYMENT

Employment issues are becoming more important than ever for farm businesses.

It has been stated that "Baby Boomers" born 1945 to 1964 tend to see a career as central to their life - they live to work! They tend to work too hard, they seek recognition for what they do and regard changing employment frequently as something to be frowned upon.

The next generation ("Generation X") tend to have a different approach. They are less concerned with job security and the overpowering career. They are prepared to work hard but want to play hard too. Their expectations include quality time with their families. They work to live.

Providing suitable employment packages to retain the Generation X group is an on-going challenge for the Baby Boomer employers.
Who needs to change them or us?

INFORMATION LIBRARY

Forum locked ABOUT THE INFORMATION

We are privileged to be able to download information from some scientific journals which we access through SciQuest. Scientific articles from the NZ Veterinary Journal and NZ Society of Animal Production are peer reviewed papers that have been through a stringent process where experts within that particular field believe the information published is proper science and is supported by standard statistical procedures. Articles from the Sheep & Beef Cattle proceedings may not have undergone peer review prior to publication.

Some of the information is in the form of an attachment that can be downloaded.

The file types are displayed:
.doc files are MICROSOFT WORD &
.pdf files which can only be opened by an ADOBE ACROBAT READER programme. To download your free version of Adobe Reader 7.0 go to www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

MANAGEMENT BEFORE & DURING DROUGHT

No new posts MANAGEMENT BEFORE & DURING THE DROUGHT

Information related to making early decisions as part of planning to manage an impending drought.

The most important aspects of getting through the drought include:

1. Making the decision that a drought is likely to occur and creating a plan.

2. Aiming to get optimal performance from the stock retained to provide next year's income

2. Recognising it's all about either reducing the feed demand or increasing the feed supply.

3. Create financial & feed budgets early & review and update regularly.

4. Focus on the solutions, get excellent advice and keep talking to others.

MANAGEMENT AFTER DROUGHT

No new posts MANAGING AFTER THE DROUGHT

More go broke after the drought than during the drought.

The key is to plan early to get through at least cost and make sure the business is positioned to make money after it rains.

THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DROUGHT!

Planning for the future is easy to put off after it has rained because the problem is solved.

Take time to review what happened and why it happened. Try to do this while the irons are still hot, don't keep putting it off, you will forget a whole lot of important factors that could be improved to help get through the next one.

No new posts FLOOD MANAGEMENT

Floods are devastating while they are happening but dealing with the aftermath can be a huge challenge.

Attached are two extensive reports following the big 2004 floods in the lower North Island.

The reports detail farmer surveys about recovering from silt damaged pastures and regrassing slips on hill country.

There will be more floods to come sometime and this research project funded by Sustainable Farming Fund, Dairy insight, Farmlands and Meat & Wool NZ will go a long way as a guide for regrassing and reseeding decisions.

No new posts FEEDING

The way we feed is probably the number one factor that drives performance. Sometimes it isn't so much about how much is fed, but what, when, how and to what!

No new posts BREEDING RAMS

The rams you use are really a basket of genetics on 4 good wheels!

They must be from the stud that will take you where you want to be and must be able to get as many ewes pregnant in as short a time as possible.

No new posts FACIAL ECZEMA

FE is one of the most significant factors that may be limiting performance throughout most of the North Island. The major costs associated with FE are due to subclinical toxicity - when you don't see any photosensitisation!

We do have a risk management model to help you understand what FE may be costing you.

Excessive Mn is uncommon in NZ pastures but increased herbage Mn levels above 400mg/kgDM have been shown to decrease lamb growth rates by up to 40%.
